I have just taken delivery of my apartment in paphos and have been told
that i have to pay costs for the common property. What really is common
property?

I presume that when you say you must pay for the costs you are referring to the costs of maintenance, upkeep etc.

When you purchase an apartment in a block or project you become the owner of the unit. This unit consists of: -

1. The individual flat that you occupy
2. And your share in the common property, that is, the lifts, parking areas, passages, gardens and the land on which the building stands

In other words, the common property consists of all the other components of the block of apartments apart from the separate residential apartments.
